Compact to turns grid questions into a concise view

Protobi allows you to simplify grid questions or question batteries into a concise view, making it easier to analyze and understand your data. In this tutorial, we'll walk through how to compact three types of question groups:

  1. Numeric Questions
  2. Categorical Questions
  3. Checkbox Questions

Compact numeric data

When dealing with numeric data (e.g., proportions or quantities), Protobi gives you several options to condense the information, such as Mean, Median, Sum, Min, Max, etc.

Example: In Q2, respondents enter a proportion of patients on each therapy and the group is meant to sum to 100. A more concise view of the data would only show the average value for each therapy instead of the full distribution of numeric ranges.

Steps to compact to Mean:

  1. Press the square icon for the group.
  2. From the context menu, select Compact to....
  1. In the Compact to dialog, choose Mean.

  2. Check the box labeled "Set element to compact display".

Note: Alternatively, you can select Percent from the dialog to compact to the mean and also round the the results within each option to ranges of 20.

  1. Once compacted, you’ll see a summary with just the average percent for each condition.

To view more details, click the triangle icon next to a condition to expand the data and see the underlying distribution.

Compact categorical data

You can also condense categorical data, such as ratings or rankings, to show only the most important insights, like the top-box scores.

Example: Suppose you have a set of ratings like Q13 below, and you’re only interested in viewing the top-box scores (6 and 7, "Significantly better"). Steps to compact to Top box scores:

  1. Press the square icon for the group.
  2. From the context menu, select Compact to....
  1. In the Compact to dialog, choose the Top box option.

  2. Add the raw values that correspond to the Top box score you want to show (e.g. 6,7).

  3. Check the box labeled "Set element to compact display".

  1. Once compacted, you’ll see only the selected top categories, simplifying the analysis.

To view the full distribution, click the triangle icon next to any item.

Compact checkbox data

Checkbox grids or "select-all-that-apply" questions typically display both the percentage of respondents who selected an option and the percentage who did not. The raw data, usually represented as 0s and 1s, is often formatted as Yes/No or True/False. These grids can be simplified to highlight only the respondents who selected a specific option.

Example: Imagine you have a checkbox grid like Q8, and you want to focus solely on the percentage of respondents who selected "Yes". You can compact to Checkbox for a more concise view.

Steps to compact to Checkbox:

  1. Press the square icon for the group.
  2. From the context menu, select Compact to....
  1. In the Compact to dialog, choose Checkbox.

  2. Check the box labeled "Set element to compact display".

  1. Once compacted, you’ll see a summary with just the average percent for each condition.
